Manchester United’s dismal season was dealt another devastating blow as they were knocked out of the Champions League after a 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich. The English giants’ fate was outwith their control following a shock defeat in matchday five against Galatasaray with Copenhagen progressing to the knockout stages after beating the Turkish side in the decider in Denmark.

Manchester United have endured a difficult season and that’s resulted in their overall market value falling more than any other English Premier League club to €799.35 million in the latest Transfermarkt update. Erik ten Hag enjoyed a successful debut campaign, leading United to third place and their first trophy in six years with the League Cup. The improvement was expected to continue this season after investing €203.4m in the summer with Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund all high-profile arrivals.

Michael Olise has been on the radar for top English clubs since his emergence at Crystal Palace with Manchester United reportedly now keen on the talented winger. Right-wing has been a problem position at United for years with Antony massively underwhelming since his €95 million move from Ajax. Sir Jim Radcliffe has agreed a deal to takeover sporting control at United with Olise rumoured to be a priority summer target. The French Under–21 international has impressed on his return from a hamstring injury this season with five goals and one assist in nine Premier League games and United won’t be the only top club monitoring his performances.

Manchester United have reportedly revived their interest in Brian Brobbey this month as they aim to strengthen their attacking options. Goal scoring has been a major problem for Erik ten Hag this season and only three clubs - Sheffield United, Burnley and Crystal Palace - have scored less in the league than United’s 24 goals.

The January transfer window continues to rumble on but it’s incredibly unlikely that any player will swap clubs in a big-money move this month. English Premier League clubs spent an absolute fortune last season as they splurged €842.5 million on new signings but that figure still remains below €50m this January. The financial power of English clubs is renowned and it’s dwarfed their European rivals across the last decade. 

The nadir of Antony’s Manchester United career arrived in their tenth league defeat of the season against Fulham on Saturday. It was initially expected that the Brazilian would deputise in Rasmus Højlund’s absence with Marcus Rashford moving to centre-forward and Alejandro Garnacho switching wings but Erik ten Hag snubbed his former Ajax colleague.
